The verse says

Krishna said: I am time, grown great, come forth to gather in the worlds. Even without you, none of these warriors drawn up in the opposing ranks will remain.

In plain words

Kālo 'smi — I am time.

That is the answer. Not a god with a grievance. Not a plan being carried out.

Time, doing what it does, at its full size.

Where you've felt this · in growing older

You repaint the window frames every three years because the weather takes the paint off. You are not losing and you are not winning. You are keeping something at a standstill that would otherwise move in one direction, and you will keep doing it for as long as you are able.

Going deeper

The most quoted line in the Gita is also the most misread, and the misreading comes from the translation most people have heard.

Rendered as I am become death, it sounds like a boast by something monstrous — a line for a weapon, and it has been used that way. The word is kāla, which means time. Time is not a destroyer in the sense of an attacker. It is the condition under which nothing stays, including the people who are frightened of it.

That reframes everything Arjuna has been watching for sixteen verses. He has been looking for an intention behind the burning and there is not one, in the way he means it.

And then the second half, which is the part that actually answers him. Even without you, these men will not remain. Not a threat. A statement that their ending was never his to cause or prevent, which is the one thing he has needed to hear since the first chapter.
