What this site knows about you

Almost nothing. This page says exactly what that means: what is collected, what is not, and what will change if that ever changes.

The short version

This site sets no cookies, runs no trackers and asks you for nothing. There is no sign-up, no newsletter, no comment box and no account. You can read all 701 verses without giving anything at all.

One small preference is saved inside your own browser so the site remembers how you like to read. It never leaves your device. The rest of this page is the detail behind those two sentences.

What is stored on your device

If you switch between the light and dark reading themes, that choice is saved in your browser under a single name, gita-theme. It is the only thing this site stores anywhere.

It is not a cookie, which matters: a cookie is sent to the server with every request, and this is not. Nothing but your own browser can read it, it holds one word, and clearing your browser data removes it. The site then simply follows whatever your device already prefers.

Analytics

There are none. No Google Analytics, no Vercel Analytics, no page counter, no heatmaps, no session recording and no third-party scripts of any kind. Nobody is counting your visit.

Analytics will most likely be added at some point, because knowing which verses are actually read is how the writing gets better. When that happens this section will name the provider, say what it collects and show you how to opt out. These two sentences will be gone, and that is how you will know.

Advertising

This site shows no advertising. There are no sponsors, no affiliate links and no paid placements. Nothing you read here was bought.

Advertising may be added later to cover the cost of hosting. If it is, this section will name the network, explain the cookies it uses and show you how to control what you are shown.

Fonts and other outside services

The two typefaces, EB Garamond for English and Noto Serif Devanagari for Sanskrit and Hindi, are served from this domain. They are downloaded once when the site is built, so your browser never requests anything from a font service and no third party learns that you came here.

Nothing else is loaded from anywhere else either. No embedded video, no social buttons, no comment service, no icon library and no scripts belonging to other companies.

Server logs

The site is hosted on Vercel. Like any web host, their servers keep short-term records of requests. Those records include your IP address, the page you asked for, the time, and the user-agent string your browser sends. This is ordinary server operation: it is how a page reaches you and how the site is kept running and secure.

Those logs are held by Vercel under their own terms. They are not read, exported, analysed or combined with anything by this site.

If you write to us

There is one email address here, for corrections to the text. If you write to it, we will have your address and whatever you chose to say. It is used to reply to you and to fix what you reported, and for nothing else.

You are not added to any mailing list, because there is no mailing list.

Children

Nothing here is aimed at children and nothing is knowingly collected from anyone of any age. A child can read this site as safely as an adult, because no reader is asked for anything.

Your rights

Data protection law in India, the European Union, the United Kingdom and elsewhere gives you rights over information about you: to see it, to correct it, to have it deleted and to object to how it is used.

In practice there is very little here to use them against, because very little is held. The reading preference is already yours and sits in your own browser, where you can delete it without asking anyone. If you have emailed us and would like that correspondence deleted, say so and it will be.

Changes to this page

If analytics or advertising are ever added, the relevant section below changes at the same moment they are switched on, because the page is built from the same setting that enables them. It cannot quietly fall out of date while something new is running.

The date at the foot of this page says when the wording was last revised.
