The verse says

Hungry, reaching for what the work will bring, greedy, ready to do harm, unclean, swung about by delight and sorrow: that doer is called driven.

In plain words

The second kind, and the last item is the one that defines it.

Harṣa-śoka-anvita - carried along by delight and grief. Up on the good days, down on the bad ones, and the swing is not under his control.

The greed and the harm are serious. But the swinging is what makes the rest of it run.

Where you've felt this · with money

Vikram trades shares and checks the prices about forty times a day. On a good morning he is generous and funny and buys lunch for the office. On a bad one nobody goes near him. His wife can tell from the sound of the door which kind of day it has been, before he has said anything.

Going deeper

Being swung by results is what the driven doer actually suffers from, and it is worth separating from the moral failings listed beside it.

Greed and readiness to harm are the items we notice, because they are the ones that affect other people. But they are downstream. When your condition is set by the outcome, you will do a great deal to control the outcome, and that is where the grasping and the harm come from.

The word for the swing is strong. Not someone who feels pleased and disappointed, which is everybody. Someone carried by it, the way a current carries you.

And the cost is paid by the people nearby long before it is paid by him. That is the detail worth keeping. A person run by results is not only unhappy; he makes the weather for everyone in the house.
