Shikhandi is the one person on this field Bhishma has sworn never to fight, because of who Shikhandi used to be. Dhrishtadyumna is the man born to kill Drona, the one Duryodhana pointedly mentioned to Drona's face at the start.
Both of the old commanders on the other side are looking at the person appointed by fate to end them.

Shikhandi's story is one of the epic's strangest, and it settles Bhishma's fate.
Shikhandi was born a girl and later became a man, and carries a grievance against Bhishma from a previous life. Bhishma knows it, and holds to a rule that he will not raise a weapon against someone who was once a woman. Arjuna will eventually shoot from behind Shikhandi, and Bhishma will not shoot back.
So the greatest warrior of the age is brought down by an old scruple he refuses to set aside.
This is the texture of the whole chapter. Everyone is held in place by something they decided long ago — a vow, a birth, a promise, a code. Nobody on this field is acting freely, which is precisely why a book about freedom has to begin here. Krishna is not going to release Arjuna from the battle. He is going to work on the only thing that can actually move: where Arjuna is standing inside himself while he fights.
