Word by word

The verse says

I want to see you as you were — crowned, with your mace, your discus in your hand. Take that four-armed form again, you of a thousand arms, you whose form is everything.

In plain words

He asks for something specific, by its details.

The crown, the mace, the discus. The familiar image, with four arms.

After the limitless, he is asking for something with a shape, and he describes it carefully so there is no mistake.

Where you've felt this · in relationships

A child staying at her grandmother's for a week asks for her own pillow to be sent over. Not a better pillow. That one. The request has nothing to do with comfort, and everybody who has been away from home as a child understands it exactly.

Going deeper

Asking for a particular form after seeing the formless is not a step backward, and the next chapter will make that explicit.

Arjuna has seen what has no edges. He asks for edges back, and he asks for familiar ones, in detail. Nothing in the chapter treats this as a failure or a lesser request. It is granted immediately and without comment.

Chapter 12 will put the matter directly: for most people the way with a form is the easier road, and it is not the inferior one.

Which is a quiet correction of a hierarchy that readers often bring to this text, where the abstract is assumed to be more advanced than the personal. The man in this chapter has had the abstract, at full strength, with a divine eye provided. What he asks for afterwards is a face he recognises.
