उत्क्रामन्तं स्थितं वापि भुञ्जानं वा गुणान्वितम्।विमूढा नानुपश्यन्ति पश्यन्ति ज्ञानचक्षुषः॥

utkrāmantaṃ sthitaṃ vāpi bhuñjānaṃ vā guṇānvitamvimūḍhā nānupaśyanti paśyanti jñāna-cakṣuṣaḥ

Word by word
utkrāmantam - departingsthitam - residingvā api - or evenbhuñjānam - enjoysvā - orguṇa-anvitam - under the spell of the modes of material naturevimūḍhāḥ - the ignorantna - notanupaśyanti - percievepaśyanti - beholdjñāna-cakṣuṣaḥ - those who possess the eyes of knowledge

The verse says

The deluded do not see him as he leaves, or as he stays, or as he takes his pleasure under the strands of nature. Those who have the eye of knowing do see.

In plain words

Three moments are named - going, staying, enjoying. That is the whole of a life, roughly.

Most people do not see the one who is doing it in any of the three. Not because it is hidden. Because they are looking at something else.

Krishna calls the difference an eye. Not a belief, not a conclusion. Something you either look with or do not.

Where you've felt this · in relationships

Your wife has been quiet for two days and you have decided she is annoyed with you. On the third evening she tells you her oldest friend is moving abroad. Nothing about those two days changes. Every single thing you noticed was accurate. You were just reading all of it with the wrong question in your hand.

Going deeper

An eye is not an argument, and calling knowledge an eye is the most useful move in this verse.

Jñāna-cakṣus is the eye of knowing. You cannot be argued into seeing something. Nobody has ever been talked into a colour. Either you are looking at the right thing, or you are looking at something else with all your facts correct.

This also removes a comfortable excuse. It does not say the self is hidden. It says the deluded do not see it, which means it has been in plain view the whole time. Not noticing is not the same as not being shown.

And the three moments listed are completely ordinary ones. Staying, leaving, enjoying. There is no special occasion on which this becomes visible. It is available in the middle of an afternoon, or not at all.
