The verse says

The brightness in the sun that lights up the whole world, and what is in the moon and in fire - know that brightness as mine.

In plain words

Having said the sun does not light that place, he now says the sun's light is his.

That is not a contradiction. It is the same point from the other side. The sun is not the source. The sun is a window.

And there is something kind in the order. He has just described a home beyond every light. Now he points at the most ordinary light there is and says: that one too.

Where you've felt this · in community

Your aunt spends two hours in a government office trying to get one form stamped and gets nowhere. At the fourth counter a clerk looks up, sees she is close to tears, and walks the form round the building himself. He has the same bad job as the other three. The same tiredness, the same queue, the same pay. Something came through him that was not coming through them.

Going deeper

The same thing can be a window or a wall depending on what you do with it, and that is the whole move here.

Six verses back the sun was ruled out: that home needs no sun. Now the sun's light is claimed as his. Both are true, and the difference is whether you stop at the sun. Treat it as the source and it hides what is behind it. Treat it as light coming through and the very same sun shows you something.

This is how the Gita keeps refusing two bad options. It will not say the world is a trick to be escaped. It will not say the world is all there is, either. It keeps saying the world is a surface that something shows through.

Which means you are not being asked to look away from anything. You are being asked to look at the same things slightly longer.
